Workshop Information
“Sexualization of Children through the New Media – How Many Ways Can You Hurt Me?”
Run by: ECPAT
The workshop will consider the extent of potential harm that can be inflicted on minors through the Internet and other new technologies. There has been an increase in online grooming, particularly with a view to offline offences. The additional influence of “sexploitation” (Sharon W. Cooper) and the normalization of sexual harm, which is so prevalent in the daily life of young people, should also be a matter of concern for professionals in regard to compliant victimization. There is a need to discuss the harmful effects of sexualizing children. Information about the most important factors relevant to sexual exploitation will enable greater understanding of the consequences of this form of exposure. The workshop will focus on the challenges faced in dealing with sexual exploitation of children in online settings in order to respond with effective prevention measures.
“New Media Education: Web 2.0 for Children and Families”
Run by: UNICEF
The internet continues to rapidly change, presenting newly arising opportunities – and challenges – for children and families, in particular. Web 2.0 technologies have become not only an important tool that changes and enriches the daily life of families. Children and adults increasingly live out parts of their lives with and through these technologies. Children and young people benefit from web 2.0 developments to have their right to access a diversity of information and to participate being fulfilled – probably more than ever before. But the internet with its new manifestations like the fast growing popularity of “social networking” can also put children and young people at risk, including exposing them to material inappropriate for their age and to sexual violence. The aim of the workshop is to look at the existing media competence of both, young people and their parents with regard to new media, to identify key challenges and formulate key actions and asks for improving the capacity of both, young people and adults to guarantee safety for children and youth in the internet.
“Victim Identification and Child Protection Services to Sexually Abused Children”
Run by: Save the Children
The workshop must take into account the disturbing fact that although primary evidence showing the sexual abuse of children is available on the Internet, we still have very little knowledge about the consequences for sexually abused children in terms of being filmed and photographed for the production and distribution of child abuse images via the new technologies. There is some work being undertaken on this issue, but comprehensive child protection services and procedures, including therapeutic services for these sexually abused children, need to be put in place on a European and global basis.
“Young (Sexual) Offenders – What now?”
Run by: Innocence in Danger
Working with offenders protects victims! – Offenders successfully treated during their youth ‘produce’ fewer victims and, in addition, are given an important and necessary opportunity to develop as part of targeted psychotherapy. The basis of all work is the rigorous expansion of education and training programmes for professionals in order to create an extensive range of therapies. The core aspects covered by the workshop are: How can knowledge gained from practice and basic research findings be efficiently and successfully implemented in practice? How can interdisciplinary approaches be implemented in practice and existing treatment models continuously further developed?
